Swiss chard or chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla) is a variety of beet (Beta vulgaris) that belongs to the Chenopodiaceae family (Amaranthaceae according to the APG system).

Swiss chard has broad, long, shiny, dark green leaves. The colour of the ribs or stems varies from white to yellowish or reddish; the most common variety in Italy is white-stemmed, but there are notable differences between regional crops. It is native to Southern Europe, where it grows wild in the Mediterranean region. There are numerous varieties, as it is cultivated in all temperate areas of the world.
This vegetable is very nutritious as it contains vitamins, fibre, folic acid and mineral salts. The outer leaves, which are the greenest, contain the greatest amount of vitamins and carotene. It also provides oxalic acid. You can consume the whole plant, including the leaves and stem. Swiss chard or chard is a vegetable with purifying, detoxifying and antioxidant properties. Although it provides just 17 calories per 100 grams, it contains a wide variety of vitamins and mineral salts. It is therefore a great addition to a healthy diet.
During pregnancy, it offers many important nutrients for both mother and baby. Furthermore, Swiss chard helps to restore minerals to the body (ideal for anyone who takes part in sports) thanks to its mineral salt content, including copper, potassium, magnesium, calcium and, above all, iron. Pan-fried swiss chard
Pan-fried Swiss chard is a quick, versatile and very easy-to-prepare side dish: an ideal addition to meat or fish dishes, it can even be served on toast, as seen in our version. Alternatively, you can eat pan-fried Swiss chard as a vegetarian main course, pairing it with a portion of legumes. You can also use it to enrich a legume soup like Sicilian fava bean “maccu”.
